I did this lava lamp in order to demonstrate different types of materials:
Photographic textures: Floor, wood & cork
Mental Ray materials: Brushed aluminum, different glasses, wax, cable, white plastic
I spent a lot of focus on the glas materials and their refractions, hence the strong magnifying glass effect.
Another thing that needed a lot of attention was the wax, since it was supposed to have an own illumination without just looking like floating lightbulbs. I tried to find a good compromise between opacity and the settings of the MR lume map. Still might need a few adjustments, I wish I could bring tiny air bubbles in and get the shadow to turn purple where it hit the wax.
Might work on that if there's still time. For now, that's good enough.
